Yobe to launch new agriculture programme to make farming profitable

Application Deadline

April 26, 2026

Description

Yobe State Government has disclosed plans to launch a new large-scale agricultural programme aimed at making farming more profitable, boosting food production, and driving economic growth across the state. Governor Mai Mala Buni revealed the plan as part of his administration’s broader strategy to reposition agriculture as a central pillar of economic development. Speaking in his Eid-el-Kabir message, the governor stressed that the initiative would transform farming into a more attractive and viable venture for residents, while strengthening food security across Yobe. According to a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs and Media, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed, the government is preparing to roll out what it described as a far-reaching agricultural programme that will engage citizens at scale. The initiative is expected to tap into the state’s natural farming potential, particularly during the rainy season, which the governor described as a critical window for increased agricultural activity. “Our administration will soon unveil a massive agricultural revolution to make farming more attractive, productive, and profitable. This initiative aims to meet our food requirements while producing surpluses for export to drive economic growth,” Buni said. The programme is designed not only to increase local food production but also to position Yobe as a contributor to regional and national food supply chains. By focusing on productivity and profitability, the government aims to encourage wider participation, especially among young people and rural communities, while creating opportunities for income generation and job creation. Governor Buni urged residents to take advantage of the planned rollout, noting that the success of the programme would depend largely on public participation. “This initiative offers a chance for everyone to contribute to building a better Yobe,” he said, calling on citizens to align with the state’s development agenda. The governor also linked the success of the agricultural drive to ongoing improvements in security across the Northeast, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts to stabilise the region. He emphasised that sustained peace remains essential for farming activities and rural development, urging residents to support security agencies. “The peace, security, and prosperity of Nigeria are paramount. Let us intensify our prayers for our leaders to be guided in ensuring increased peace and prosperity,” he added. Beyond agriculture, the message highlighted the importance of unity, resilience, and collective responsibility, especially as communities continue to rebuild from the impact of past insecurity. The administration believes that a strengthened agricultural sector will play a key role in sustaining livelihoods and accelerating recovery. Deputy Governor Idi Barde Gubana echoed similar sentiments, urging residents to remain steadfast despite economic pressures. He noted that current economic challenges are global, while encouraging continued prayers for improved security and a successful farming season. “As Muslims, we must intensify prayers for improved security, economic stability, and a bountiful harvest for our country,” Gubana stated.
