The position provides both academic and financial support, enabling the candidate to focus on producing high-quality, publishable research. Funding and Key Details This PhD opportunity includes a competitive funding package designed to support the candidate throughout the duration of the programme. Key details include: Duration: 48 months (full-time) Stipend: €18,500 per annum Tuition Fees: Fully covered (EU and non-EU) Additional Support: Paid teaching assistantship opportunities Closing Date: April 7, 2026 (23:00 GMT) Applicants should note that eligibility for EU fees requires residency in an EU member state for at least three of the last five years. Research Streams The programme offers two distinct research streams, allowing candidates to either join an existing project or propose their own research focus. Stream 1: Social Attitudes to Taxation and Social SpendingThis research stream focuses on understanding how social groups perceive taxation and welfare policies. The project draws on fiscal sociology and welfare research to explore: The influence of values, beliefs, and institutional frameworks The relationship between income, education, and political orientation Public perceptions of social spending efficiency Connections between attitudes to immigration and taxation The project uses qualitative and mixed-method approaches, offering opportunities for policy-relevant research. Stream 2: Migration and Employment (Open Proposal)This stream allows applicants to design their own research project within key thematic areas, such as: Determinants of labour migration in Europe Migratory pathways into labour markets Employer recruitment strategies and practices Candidates must submit a detailed research proposal outlining objectives, theoretical framework, and methodology. Research Responsibilities PhD candidates are expected to engage in rigorous academic research and contribute actively to the department’s scholarly environment. Core responsibilities include: Conducting comprehensive literature reviews Designing and implementing research methodologies (qualitative or mixed methods) Collecting and analysing data through interviews, surveys, and case studies Presenting research at local, national, and international conferences Publishing four journal articles based on the PhD research Collaborating closely with supervisors and research teams Additionally, candidates will provide approximately four hours of weekly teaching support during term time, contributing to undergraduate tutorials.
