The University of Bath’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is inviting applications for a Research Associate position focused on advancing knowledge in fluid dynamics and heat transfer within rotating compressor cavities of gas turbine engines. This full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral research opportunity offers an exciting pathway for an engineering researcher to contribute to the development of next-generation hydrogen-compatible turbomachinery technology. The project combines academic excellence with industrial collaboration, creating an opportunity to work on research with direct relevance to the future of sustainable aviation and net-zero energy systems. The successful candidate will join a major research initiative funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and conducted in collaboration with the University of Surrey, Rolls-Royce, and Siemens Energy. Applications close on 26 October 2026, with interviews scheduled for 16 November 2026. Position Overview The Research Associate will lead an ambitious experimental research project investigating buoyancy-driven rotating flows within compressor cavities at low technology readiness levels (TRL). The research aims to improve understanding of complex fluid behaviour and heat transfer mechanisms under engine-representative conditions. Findings from the project will contribute to improved design approaches for future hydrogen-powered gas turbine engines. This role provides an opportunity for an experienced researcher to apply advanced engineering knowledge to a project with significant industrial and environmental impact. The position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to: Lead a technically challenging research programme Develop innovative experimental methods Investigate advanced fluid dynamics and thermal processes Collaborate with leading academic and industrial partners Strengthen research leadership and technical development skills Build an international professional network Research Project Focus The project centres on the experimental investigation of buoyancy-induced rotating flow in compressor cavities. Researchers will examine fluid behaviour across a range of non-dimensional conditions that represent real engine operating environments. A major aspect of the research involves understanding boundary-layer transition from laminar to turbulent flow at high Grashof numbers. This fundamental investigation will help improve prediction methods and support the design of more efficient and sustainable turbine systems. The experimental programme will use newly developed instrumentation and advanced measurement techniques. The results will be complemented by computational simulations carried out at the University of Surrey. The combined experimental and computational approach will allow research outcomes to be scaled towards higher technology readiness levels and applied to future industrial engine development. Successful implementation of the research findings is expected to support improved engine design methodologies at Rolls-Royce and Siemens Energy, particularly for hydrogen-compatible propulsion technologies. Candidate Requirements The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise and a passion for engineering innovation. Applicants should have: A PhD in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent industrial research and development experience Experience conducting experimental research and analysing technical data Knowledge of data analysis tools such as MATLAB Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple stakeholders Candidates should demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, research independence, and the confidence to contribute to multidisciplinary engineering projects. Experience related to turbomachinery, thermal systems, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, experimental methods, or aerospace engineering would be advantageous. Employment Details The Research Associate position is offered on a full-time basis of 36.5 hours per week with a fixed-term duration of approximately 36 months. The position is classified as: Job Title: Research Associate Department: Mechanical Engineering Grade: Grade 7 Salary: Starting from £38,784, rising to £46,049 Reference: SB13960 Contract Type: Full-time, fixed-term The role will provide access to professional development opportunities, research training, and dedicated support to help the successful candidate progress academically and professionally.
