The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is inviting applications for the position of Associate Professional – Statistics within its Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre (KPFC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. About the International Renewable Energy Agency IRENA is an intergovernmental organisation that promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy. The agency works to advance sustainable development, energy security and low-carbon economic growth. Its activities contribute to international efforts to expand renewable energy and improve access to reliable, sustainable and modern energy. The Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre supports this mandate through data collection, research, knowledge development and analysis related to renewable energy policy and investment. Within the centre, the Statistics Unit provides reliable and timely renewable energy statistics. These data support energy planning, international comparisons and monitoring of commitments such as Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), which focuses on affordable and clean energy. The Associate Professional – Statistics will contribute to this work by helping maintain high-quality datasets and developing statistical information that supports evidence-based decision-making. Key responsibilities include: 1. Collecting and validating renewable energy statistics The successful candidate will collect, check, compile and process renewable energy statistics from primary and secondary sources. This will involve following established procedures for data collection, processing, storage and dissemination while ensuring that datasets meet appropriate quality standards. 2. Preparing statistical information for publication The role involves preparing data for dissemination through publications, webpages, country profiles, databases and other communication channels. The successful candidate may also help promote IRENA’s statistics at events and through media-related activities. 3. Supporting technical meetings and capacity building The Associate Professional will organise and participate in seminars, expert meetings, working groups and projects. Responsibilities may include contributing technical expertise to training activities focused on renewable energy statistics. 4. Conducting research and analysis The position requires research to address gaps in renewable energy datasets and add value to the statistics collected by IRENA. Particular attention will be given to off-grid energy technologies and information needed to monitor SDG 7. 5. Performing additional duties The successful candidate may undertake other duties assigned in support of the Statistics Unit and the wider Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be 32 years old or younger when submitting their applications. Educational Qualifications Applicants must possess a first-level university degree or a master’s degree, or an equivalent qualification, in one of the following fields: Statistics. Mathematics. Professional Experience and Technical Skills Experience in collecting, compiling, analysing and disseminating statistics is required. The following additional skills and experience would be advantageous: Familiarity with Python or R for statistical analysis and data manipulation. Knowledge of Power BI or Tableau for data visualisation. Experience managing and manipulating large datasets. Knowledge of methodologies used in energy statistics. Ability to conduct research and analyse statistical information with minimal guidance. Applicants should demonstrate accuracy, analytical thinking and attention to detail, particularly when working with datasets used to monitor international energy targets. Language Requirements Excellent written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other official United Nations languages is an advantage, particularly Spanish or Russian. Salary, Benefits and Allowances IRENA offers an indicative annual salary ranging from US$36,000 to US$54,000, depending on qualifications and years of relevant work experience.
