Description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Adult Education Instructor to join its education team in Elizabeth, New Jersey. This full-time, hybrid position plays a vital role in supporting refugees and immigrants as they build essential language, workplace, and digital skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency and long-term integration. Founded in 1933, the IRC is one of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations, operating in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities. The organization works to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and dignity to people affected by conflict and disaster. Through its education programs, the IRC empowers newcomers with practical skills to navigate life and employment in their new communities. Position Overview The Adult Education Instructor will deliver English Language Training (ELT), Cultural Orientation (CO), Job Readiness Training (JRT), and Digital Literacy courses. Reporting to the Adult Education Coordinator, the instructor will provide contextualized, learner-centered instruction that supports employment readiness, community integration, and personal development. This role requires a high level of independence, strong classroom management skills, and the ability to engage adult learners from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. In addition to teaching, the instructor will be responsible for lesson planning, assessments, data collection, and compliance with grant reporting requirements. Key Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum Delivery Deliver content-based English language instruction aligned with ELT, JRT, CO, and digital literacy objectives Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to diverse learning styles and learner goals Integrate job readiness, workplace communication, and technology skills into ESL instruction Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation and retention Assessment and Student Progress Design and administer assessments to measure learning outcomes and track student progress Monitor attendance, participation, and performance to support high retention rates Support learners with limited formal education or literacy skills using adaptive teaching strategies Program Administration and Reporting Submit weekly lesson plans and bi-weekly unit plans Coordinate student registration, intake, and pre- and post-testing as required Collect, manage, and report client data in compliance with grant requirements Assist with internal and external reporting as needed Collaboration and Team Engagement Participate in regular team meetings and professional development activities Collaborate with colleagues to align instruction with broader program goals Carry out additional duties as assigned to support program effectiveness Working Hours and Environment Total Hours: 37.5 hours per week Approximately 20 hours teaching 10 hours lesson planning 5 hours administrative tasks 2 hours team meetings Work Environment: Standard office setting with hybrid flexibility Remote Option: Some virtual teaching permitted for online classes Required Qualifications and Skills Education and Experience University degree required Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching adult English language learners TESOL degree or certificate strongly preferred Experience living or working outside the United States is an advantage Technical and Professional Skills Strong knowledge of adult learning theory and student-centered teaching approaches Experience working with refugees and immigrants from varied cultural backgrounds Familiarity with interpreters and multilingual learning environments Experience using online learning platforms such as Zoom High level of organization, attention to detail, and time management Language and Interpersonal Skills Fluency in English required Fluency in an additional language strongly preferred Excellent culturally responsive communication and facilitation skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting Compensation and Benefits Pay Range: USD 26.50 – 28.04 per hour (U.S.-based candidates) Competitive benefits package including: Paid sick leave and U.S. public holidays 20–25 days of paid time off (based on role and tenure) Medical, dental, and vision insurance 403(b) retirement plan with immediate employer matching Disability and life insurance Employee Assistance Program for mental health and wellbeing support Why Work with the IRC A career with the IRC offers the opportunity to engage in meaningful, mission-driven work that directly impacts lives.
