Google Student Researcher, PhD, Winter-Summer 2027
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 6, 2026

Description

Google is inviting applications for its Student Researcher, PhD, Winter-Summer 2027 program, offering PhD students an opportunity to participate in research projects addressing real-world, large-scale challenges. The program brings together students and research teams across areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer science, data science, software engineering, linguistics, statistics, natural sciences, and related technical disciplines. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and Google encourages interested candidates to apply early. The anticipated application deadline is July 16, 2027, although the recruitment window may close earlier if available research projects are filled. About the Student Researcher Program The Student Researcher Program supports academic collaboration by placing PhD students on research projects aligned with Google’s scientific and technological priorities. Unlike a traditional seasonal research internship, the Student Researcher position offers greater flexibility regarding project duration, weekly time commitment, and working arrangements. Participants may contribute to research conducted across Google’s research teams, including Google Research, Google DeepMind, Google Cloud, and other parts of the company. Projects vary according to the needs of individual teams and students, with start dates typically falling between January and August 2027. The program is intended for students who will remain enrolled in their academic programs. Participation does not automatically lead to full-time employment with Google, and students seeking permanent positions after the research engagement are encouraged to apply through Google’s standard recruitment channels. Research Areas Student Researchers may be considered for projects spanning a wide range of technical and scientific fields. Relevant areas include Natural Language Understanding, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Quantum Information Science, Data Science, and Software Engineering. Research projects are exploratory and are designed to advance scientific knowledge and develop innovative technologies. Participants may work collaboratively with researchers and engineers on challenges involving intelligent systems, algorithms, sustainability, large-scale computing, and other areas of technological advancement. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be currently enrolled in a PhD degree program at the time of the engagement. Eligible fields include Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical discipline. Candidates must also demonstrate a research focus and experience in at least one relevant area of computer science or another applicable technical field. Preferred qualifications include experience conducting research through internships, laboratories, or full-time research positions. Experience contributing to research communities, including publications in major journals or conferences, is also advantageous. Experience with general-purpose programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, C, or C++ may further strengthen an application. Application Requirements Applicants are expected to submit an updated CV or résumé, clearly stating their anticipated graduation date in month/year format. They must also provide a current official or unofficial transcript in English, preferably in PDF format. Applicants are strongly encouraged to highlight research publications, specialized laboratory work, major research contributions, and other evidence demonstrating their research capabilities and interests. Location and Working Arrangements The program has opportunities across numerous Google locations in the United States, including Mountain View, Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Austin, Boston-area locations, Chicago, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Washington, D.C., and others. Participants are generally required to be located in the United States for the duration of the engagement. Depending on project requirements, certain remote arrangements from within the United States or Canada may be permitted. Candidates residing in other countries may need to relocate to the United States. Benefits and Compensation Google states that eligible U.S.-based interns receive benefits that include health, dental, and vision insurance, paid holidays, and sick time. The listed compensation range is US$118,000–US$157,000, although individual compensation is determined according to factors such as relevant skills, experience, education, and training. How to Apply Interested PhD students should submit their applications through Google’s official careers platform as early as possible because applications are reviewed continuously and projects may fill before the stated deadline. Deadline: July 16, 2027, or earlier if available projects are filled.
