Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) is seeking a dynamic feminist and women’s rights advocate to join its Board of Directors. This opportunity is designed for individuals committed to advancing gender justice and transforming power relations across the African continent. UAF-Africa is a feminist, pan-African Rapid Response Fund that supports African feminists and women’s human rights defenders through solidarity-driven resourcing. The organization plays a critical role in enabling timely responses to urgent situations while strengthening movements for long-term impact. Serving on the Board offers a unique opportunity to contribute to governance, strategy, and leadership within a values-driven institution dedicated to feminist principles and social justice. Role and Responsibilities of Board Members The Board of Directors is composed of leaders from feminist and women’s rights movements across Africa. Members are expected to actively contribute to the organization’s governance and strategic direction while upholding its mission and values. Key responsibilities include: Participating in two in-person board meetings annually Preparing for meetings by reviewing board materials in advance Engaging in strategic, governance, and generative discussions Asking critical and constructive questions to strengthen decision-making Serving on at least one board committee and contributing to its work Supporting strong board dynamics and collaborative leadership Board members serve a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term. The expected time commitment is approximately 10–15 hours per month. Required Skills and Competencies All board members are expected to bring a combination of governance knowledge, leadership capacity, and a strong commitment to feminist values. Core competencies include: Understanding of governance structures, fiduciary duties, and duty of care Ability to make informed and strategic decisions Strong ethical standards and integrity in personal and professional conduct Willingness to engage in critical discussions and challenge assumptions Organisational and strategic awareness Financial literacy appropriate for governance roles Commitment to advancing women’s rights, democracy, and social justice Ability to work effectively in diverse and multicultural environments Proficiency in both English and French Candidates should also demonstrate a broad understanding of African contexts, including political, social, and cultural dynamics, with an appreciation for international perspectives. Desired Profile and Expertise UAF-Africa is currently seeking candidates with specific expertise and lived experiences to strengthen its Board. Priority will be given to individuals who meet the following criteria: Feminists with a legal background and at least 15 years of post-qualification experience Individuals with conflict management qualifications and skills Representation from Central African countries, including: Angola Central African Republic Chad Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) Equatorial Guinea Gabon The organization strongly encourages applications from: Women in all their diversity Individuals from minority groups (ethnic, religious, linguistic) Candidates representing a range of age groups Additional expertise areas include: Governance Expertise: Financial management Risk management Programmatic strategy Programmatic and Issue Expertise: Support for women’s human rights defenders in urgent situations Feminist philanthropy Holistic protection strategies Intersectional movement building Advocacy and agenda setting Knowledge leadership Solidarity and network-building Application Process Interested candidates are required to complete the official application form and submit it via email. Selection Process The Board Recruitment Committee of UAF-Africa will review applications on a rolling basis.
