Now in its third phase SASUF+ (2025–2028) the initiative focuses on strengthening partnerships, fostering innovation, and addressing shared global challenges through a “local” approach that integrates both local and global perspectives. Purpose of the Seed Grants The SASUF-NRF Seed Grants are designed to promote collaboration between academia, industry, and society. The programme supports joint research projects that: Advance scientific knowledge in both countries Encourage mobility and collaboration among researchers Support early-career and emerging researchers Contribute to research capacity development Strengthen long-term international partnerships Key Research Themes Proposals must align with one of four priority thematic areas: Sustainable Health Green Transition Migration and Urbanisation Democracy, Social Justice, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems These themes reflect urgent global challenges and encourage interdisciplinary approaches that bridge science, society, and policy. Funding and Duration Each selected project will receive funding for a maximum of two years, starting from 1 August 2026 and running until late 2028. Funding includes: Up to 100,000 SEK (Swedish portion) Up to 160,000 ZAR (South African portion) A maximum of 20 projects will be funded under this call. Importantly, funding is intended for research collaboration activities not salaries or large infrastructure. Supported costs include: Research mobility and exchange visits Workshops, conferences, and seminars Collaborative meetings and dissemination activities Eligibility Requirements To qualify, proposals must be submitted by a multi-institutional consortium, including: At least two South African universities At least two Swedish universities At least one industry partner, NGO, or organisation Each proposal must include: One Principal Investigator (PI) from South Africa One Principal Investigator from Sweden Principal Investigators must hold a PhD, while additional collaborators may come from academia, industry, municipalities, or civil society. Application Process Applications must be submitted separately in both countries: The South African PI applies via the NRF Connect system The Swedish PI submits via email to SASUF Required documents include: CVs of all consortium members Institutional support letters Partner participation letters Detailed project plan and budgets Incomplete applications will be disqualified, making careful preparation essential. Selection and Evaluation Applications are reviewed by subject-matter experts in both countries. Key evaluation criteria include: Scientific quality and innovation Feasibility and long-term collaboration potential Contribution to human capacity development Final funding decisions are made jointly by SASUF and NRF committees, with results expected in July 2026.
