The World Conference of Science Journalists 2027 (WCSJ2027) is inviting applications for its Travel Fellowship programme, supporting journalists, journalism students and eligible professionals who would otherwise be unable to attend the international conference in London because of limited financial resources. The fellowship provides financial support towards international travel, visa costs, limited local transport and accommodation, together with full conference registration, refreshments and lunches during the conference. WCSJ2027 will take place in London from 6–9 September 2027, with the fellowship supporting selected participants to attend the full conference programme. Application deadline: 23 October 2026 at 23:59 BST About the WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship The WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship aims to broaden international participation in the World Conference of Science Journalists and improve access for professionals who have limited funding opportunities in their countries or organisations. The fellowship is open to journalists covering science and related areas such as engineering, climate and health, as well as students and eligible researchers or educators with a proven journalism track record. Applicants may be staff members or freelancers and may work in print, online, broadcast, podcasting or other media formats. Fellowship Benefits Successful Travel Fellows will receive financial support covering approved costs associated with attending WCSJ2027 in London. Benefits include: Financial support for travel to and from London. Support for eligible UK visa application costs. Limited local transport related to the conference and official programme activities. Up to six nights of accommodation. Full WCSJ2027 conference registration. Refreshments and lunches provided during the conference programme. The fellowship does not provide a per diem. WCSJ2027 will arrange and pay for approved travel and accommodation directly. Other approved expenses may be reimbursed after the fellow arrives in London. What the Fellowship Does Not Cover Applicants should note that the fellowship does not cover: Unrelated local transport within London. Local transport in the applicant’s home country. Travel costs associated with obtaining a passport or visa. Additional hotel nights beyond those arranged by WCSJ2027. Hotel room charges or personal accommodation expenses. Meals outside the conference programme. Personal expenses. Travel insurance or health expenses. Per diem payments. Who Can Apply? The programme is open to several groups. Journalists and media professionals can apply if they cover science or related areas, even when science journalism is not their primary professional activity. Applicants may work full-time, part-time or freelance. Students studying science journalism, journalism, media studies, science communication or related subjects may also apply. Students must be of legal age in their home country and able to travel independently. Researchers and educators in journalism, media studies or science communication may apply where they can demonstrate a proven professional journalism track record as authors or producers. Applicants do not need a minimum number of years of professional experience. Eligibility Requirements Before applying, candidates should ensure that they: Can attend the full WCSJ2027 conference in London. Can provide evidence of professional journalism experience where required. Have a passport valid until at least the end of September 2027, or evidence that a new or renewed passport has been applied for. Can complete the application and supporting documentation in English. Meet the fellowship’s professional and eligibility requirements. Applicants who need a UK visa are responsible for applying for the visa. If selected, WCSJ2027 will provide a supporting letter, and eligible visa application costs will be covered or reimbursed according to the fellowship arrangements. Application Requirements Applicants will need to provide information about their professional background, including: Current employer, institution or professional affiliation. Current role and years of professional experience. A CV or résumé of no more than two pages. Professional biography. Three examples of published work from the previous two years. A supporting letter from an employer, editor, educational institution or relevant professional association. Work samples may include written, audio, video or multimedia journalism. Applicants will also answer questions explaining: Why they want to attend WCSJ2027. What they hope to learn. How attendance will benefit their professional work. What expertise they can contribute to the WCSJ2027 community. How they will share knowledge gained from the conference. Why additional financial assistance is required. Applicants whose work was originally produced in another language may provide an English translation or transcript, provided it faithfully represents the original work. The original version must also be supplied. Selection Criteria Applications will undergo a competitive international assessment. Selection considers applicants’ commitment to science journalism, professional development and engagement with the journalism community, motivation for attending WCSJ2027, potential benefit and contribution, plans for sharing knowledge, quality of professional work and financial need. Financial need is an important component of the assessment. Applicants should explain what funding is already available to them and why they would otherwise be unable to attend. WCSJ2027 also seeks a balanced and internationally representative fellowship cohort. The applicant’s usual country of residence may therefore be considered as part of the administrative assessment. Under the stated criteria, applicants based in countries classified as low-income or lower-middle-income by the World Bank at the application deadline will receive additional consideration. There are no stated geographical quotas. How to Strengthen the Application Applicants should select three strong examples of recent journalism that demonstrate their professional ability and commitment to accurate, independent and critical journalism. The motivation statement should explain specifically why attending WCSJ2027 matters to the applicant’s professional development rather than providing only a general interest in science journalism. Candidates should also provide a clear plan for sharing what they learn with colleagues, professional networks, audiences or journalism communities in their country or region. The funding statement should clearly explain existing sources of financial support and why those resources are insufficient to cover participation costs. Application Process Applications must be submitted through the online WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship application form. An offline version is available to help applicants prepare their answers, but it cannot be submitted as the final application. The application may take approximately 30 minutes to complete, and applicants can save their progress and return to it later. The application deadline is: 23 October 2026 at 23:59 BST Successful applicants are expected to be notified by the end of February 2027. Selected fellows will subsequently be contacted to arrange travel and accommodation and, where applicable, receive support relating to the visa process.
