The competition is designed to attract research talent, support interdisciplinary work and improve access to postgraduate research opportunities. Successful applicants can benefit from financial support towards tuition fees and living expenses, alongside opportunities for academic and professional development. Applicants submit one scholarship application to be considered for the relevant schemes covered by this competition, subject to the eligibility criteria of each stream. Available Scholarship Streams The 2027 competition includes six funding streams: 1. Faculty Chancellors Scholarships — up to 30 awards These scholarships support eligible postgraduate researchers undertaking research within participating faculties. Under the published scheme details, additional benefits include a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-rate stipend for 3.5 years and a £5,000 Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG). 2. Interdisciplinary Chancellors Scholarships — up to 12 awards This stream supports doctoral research involving interdisciplinary approaches. Applicants should consult the scheme-specific guidance for its additional eligibility requirements and benefits. 3. AHRC Doctoral Scholarships — up to 3 awards These awards support eligible doctoral research associated with the Arts and Humanities Research Council funding stream. Applicants should check the official guidance for subject eligibility and any additional requirements. 4. Doctoral Access – Pathway — up to 3 awards This stream is designed to support eligible applicants through a doctoral access pathway. Applicants should review the official criteria to establish whether their circumstances and proposed studies qualify. 5. Doctoral Access – Sanctuary — up to 2 awards This stream provides a dedicated route for eligible sanctuary applicants seeking postgraduate research opportunities. Specific eligibility conditions apply. 6. China Scholarship Council — up to 30 awards This stream operates through the China Scholarship Council scheme. Applicants should consult Warwick’s official guidance for the relevant eligibility rules, nomination arrangements and application requirements. Scholarship Benefits Warwick’s postgraduate research scholarships include the following core benefits: Full tuition fees: Payment of academic fees at the applicable UK or international rate. Tax-free maintenance stipend: Financial support towards living costs. Full-time or part-time study: Subject to the requirements of the specific scheme and applicable visa conditions. Annual leave: Up to eight weeks per year. Temporary suspension: The option to suspend studies in qualifying circumstances, subject to university policy. Disability support: Access to additional support for disabled postgraduate researchers. Professional development: Opportunities to develop academic, research and transferable skills. For the Faculty Chancellors stream, the published additional benefits include a UKRI-rate stipend for 3.5 years, a £5,000 research training and support grant, paid leave for eligible family and medical reasons, and the opportunity for eligible international applicants to seek support towards UK visa and immigration costs. Part-time funding is calculated at 60% of the full-time rate, with a proportionally longer funding period. Benefits may differ between scholarship streams, so applicants should check the terms of their preferred scheme. Who Is Eligible to Apply? Applicants must meet the following general requirements: Apply for an eligible postgraduate research course at the University of Warwick. Plan to begin their studies in October 2027, during the 2027/28 academic year. Meet the admission requirements of their selected doctoral programme. Submit a separate scholarship application through the designated portal. Meet any additional eligibility requirements attached to the selected funding stream. Eligible courses include PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD and the PhD stage of an eligible combined programme, such as a 1+3 or 2+4 route. For the Faculty Chancellors scheme, applicants may be of any nationality or fee status. Current postgraduate research students are not eligible for that scheme. Other streams may have different conditions. Scholarships cannot be deferred to a future academic year. How to Apply Applicants should begin preparing well before the deadline because the course and scholarship applications are separate stages. Step 1: Read the guidance. Review the competency-based assessment criteria and applicant guidance notes Step 2: Apply for an eligible doctoral course. Submit the postgraduate research course application by 7 December 2026: Step 3: Obtain the applicant ID. After submitting the course application, applicants should receive an automated email containing a seven-digit applicant ID. Warwick advises allowing at least 48 hours for this email to arrive. Step 4: Register the applicant account. Register the required ITS applicant account Step 5: Submit the scholarship application. Complete the scholarship application and upload all required supporting documents by 10 December 2026 at 16:59 GMT: References must be submitted by 21 December 2026 at 16:59 GMT. Late submissions are not accepted. How to Strengthen Your Application Applicants should clearly explain their research objectives, demonstrate their academic preparedness and show how their proposed work aligns with the relevant department or scholarship stream. A strong application should present a coherent research proposal, demonstrate awareness of the relevant literature and explain the potential contribution of the research. Applicants should also review the published assessment criteria carefully and allow sufficient time for referees to submit their references.
