globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 30, 2026

Description

The United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) is inviting applications for the Doha Programme of Action Midterm Review (DPoA MTR) Journalism Fellowship 2027. This fully funded opportunity will support 10 journalists from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to attend and report on the Midterm Review scheduled for 25–27 March 2027 in Doha, Qatar. The fellowship aims to strengthen media coverage of sustainable development priorities, highlight progress towards international commitments, and connect global development discussions with the realities experienced by communities in LDCs. Application deadline: 30 November 2026. About the DPoA MTR Journalism Fellowship The Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) provides a framework for accelerating sustainable development and supporting countries working towards sustainable graduation from the LDC category. Its Midterm Review will assess implementation progress, identify remaining gaps, and strengthen partnerships for the remainder of the decade. Through this fellowship, selected journalists will have an opportunity to report on discussions, policy developments, and commitments emerging from the review. Their reporting is expected to help audiences understand how international decisions affect national development priorities and local communities. The programme is particularly relevant to journalists covering development, economics, governance, climate change, technology, trade, and international cooperation. Fellowship Benefits The 10 selected fellows will receive financial and professional support to participate in the Midterm Review in Doha. Benefits include: Round-trip economy-class travel to Doha, Qatar. A daily subsistence allowance for accommodation and meals, in accordance with applicable United Nations rules. Participation in pre-conference orientation activities, where applicable. Access to fellowship briefings and networking opportunities. The fellowship provides an opportunity to engage with international development discussions, strengthen professional networks, and produce journalism that informs public debate on sustainable development. Applicants should note that selection does not automatically guarantee conference accreditation, visa issuance, or travel clearance. Participation remains subject to the completion of all required administrative and travel formalities. Who Can Apply? Applicants must satisfy all the following eligibility requirements: Age and nationality: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and nationals of one of the 44 eligible Least Developed Countries. Professional journalism status: Applicants must be bona fide journalists whose work is regularly published or broadcast by a recognised media outlet. Both staff journalists and freelancers are eligible. Professional experience: Applicants must have at least two years of professional journalism experience. Availability to travel: Applicants must be willing and able to travel to Doha for the Midterm Review and participate in all required briefings and fellowship activities. Applicants should also demonstrate an interest in sustainable development, particularly the priority areas outlined in the Doha Programme of Action. Priority Reporting Areas Reporting proposals are encouraged to address one or more of the six DPoA priority areas: Investing in people: Poverty eradication, healthcare, education, social protection, and human capital development. Science, technology and innovation: Digital inclusion, closing the digital divide, and using innovation to address development challenges. Structural transformation: Economic diversification, modernisation, inclusive growth, and reduced dependence on vulnerable sectors. International trade and regional integration: Market access, regional cooperation, and improved trade facilitation. Climate change and resilience: Climate adaptation, environmental protection, ecosystem restoration, and preparedness for future shocks. International solidarity and partnerships: Global cooperation, innovative financing, and support for sustainable development and graduation from the LDC category. Strong proposals should explain why the selected issues matter to audiences in LDCs and how the reporting will improve public understanding of development commitments and their implementation. Application Requirements Applicants must prepare three documents before completing the online application form. 1. Short biography — maximum 300 words The biography should outline the applicant’s current professional position, media affiliations, years of journalism experience, reporting expertise, languages spoken, and relevant experience covering DPoA priority areas. 2. Two published work samples Applicants must submit two examples of previously published journalism. Eligible formats include print, online, radio, television, multimedia, and digital journalism. At least one sample must address development-related issues. 3. Reporting proposal — maximum 400 words The proposal should describe the story angles the applicant intends to pursue before, during, and after the Midterm Review. It should explain the relevance of the proposed stories to LDC audiences, how the reporting will improve public understanding of DPoA implementation, the intended reporting formats, and the publication strategy and target outlets. Fellowship Deliverables and Responsibilities Selected fellows must produce and publish at least three substantive journalism outputs: Before the review: One output raising awareness of the Midterm Review and relevant development issues. During the review: One output covering important discussions, announcements, or perspectives from Doha. After the review: One output examining the outcomes, implications, and follow-up for audiences in LDCs. Publication links must be submitted by 30 April 2027. Fellows are also expected to participate in required programme activities and uphold professional standards of accuracy, fairness, ethics, safety, applicable law, and venue rules. Application Deadline and How to Apply Applications must be submitted through the official online application portal by 30 November 2026. There is no application fee, and incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Applicants are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements, prepare all three documents, and ensure that their work samples and reporting proposals demonstrate strong journalism experience and a clear understanding of development challenges affecting LDCs. The indicative programme schedule includes an online orientation in February 2027, reporting in Doha from 25–27 March 2027, and post-fellowship reporting and review within six weeks after the event.
