The University of Oxford, through its School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE), is inviting applications for the Palestine-Oxford Scholarship in Geography and the Environment 2027. This fully funded doctoral scholarship is designed to support a Palestinian scholar pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil/PhD) in geography, environmental research or a related field at Oxford, beginning in October 2027. The scholarship aims to strengthen Palestinian higher education by equipping a future academic leader with advanced research training, international academic experience and opportunities to contribute to the development of Palestinian universities. The award covers doctoral tuition fees for three years, a living stipend, research expenses, eligible travel costs, visa fees and the UK National Health Service (NHS) surcharge. The application deadline is 26 January 2027 at 12:00 noon UK time. Key Scholarship Details Scholarship: Palestine-Oxford Scholarship in Geography and the Environment Host institution: University of Oxford Academic department: School of Geography and the Environment Study level: Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil/PhD) Study location: Oxford, United Kingdom Programme commencement: October 2027 Funding duration: Three years of full-time doctoral study Funding type: Fully funded Eligible applicants: Palestinians meeting the scholarship’s residency and academic requirements Application deadline: 26 January 2027, 12:00 noon UK time Application method: Oxford’s standard graduate admissions process Scholarship enquiries: Dr Hashem Abushama — hashem.abushama@ouce.ox.ac.uk About the Palestine-Oxford Scholarship The scholarship seeks to support the next generation of Palestinian academic leadership in geography, environmental studies and related disciplines. Through doctoral research at Oxford, the selected scholar will receive training intended to strengthen their academic expertise and future contribution to Palestinian higher education. Applicants must propose a research area for which the School of Geography and the Environment can provide appropriate academic supervision. Research interests should align with the school’s expertise and be suitable for a doctoral programme in geography and the environment. Where appropriate, the successful scholar will be encouraged to help establish collaborative academic activities between Palestinian higher education institutions and researchers at Oxford. What Does the Scholarship Cover? The Palestine-Oxford Scholarship provides comprehensive financial support for the successful candidate. 1. Full doctoral tuition fees The scholarship covers course fees for three years of the DPhil programme. 2. Living stipend The recipient will receive a living stipend at the standard University of Oxford graduate rate to support living expenses during the doctoral programme. 3. Research expenses Eligible research costs will be supported at levels comparable to United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) rates. 4. Travel support The scholarship provides support for travel to and from the United Kingdom, including travel to take up the award and return travel after completion. The announcement specifies a maximum of two additional trips during the scholarship period. 5. Visa and healthcare-related costs Eligible visa costs and the UK NHS surcharge are covered. Important: The scholarship does not cover spousal or family travel, maintenance or visa costs. Applicants with dependants should consider these exclusions when planning their studies. Eligibility Requirements The scholarship is intended for applicants from the Palestinian Territories and eligible Palestinian refugees in neighbouring countries. Applicants must meet the following conditions: Eligible residency or refugee status: Applicants must be residents of the Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank, or Palestinian refugees registered in Syria, Lebanon or Jordan. Residency or education history: Applicants will normally have lived in, or received at least five years of education in, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the West Bank, Gaza or East Jerusalem. Master’s degree: Candidates must have completed a recognised master’s-level qualification with appropriate research training before beginning the DPhil. Academic suitability: Applicants must meet the University of Oxford’s standard graduate admissions requirements. English proficiency: Candidates must satisfy Oxford’s applicable English-language requirements. Research potential: Applicants must demonstrate the academic merit and potential required for doctoral-level research. Commitment to Palestinian higher education: Applicants must explain their commitment to contributing to the future of Palestinian higher education. Priority may be given to suitably qualified applicants from Gaza. The selection committee may consider exceptions to the residency requirement for applicants affected by conflict and displacement. Applicants in these circumstances should explain their situation and how displacement has disrupted their residency history. How to Prepare a Strong Application Applicants should begin by developing an initial outline of their proposed doctoral research. They should then review the School of Geography and the Environment’s research areas and identify potential supervisors whose expertise matches the proposed project. A competitive application should: Present a focused, feasible and academically strong doctoral research proposal. Demonstrate relevant master’s-level research training and academic preparation. Explain the project’s relevance to geography, environmental research or a related field supported by the school. Provide evidence of eligibility and residency or refugee status. Clearly explain the applicant’s commitment to strengthening Palestinian higher education. Address any conflict-related displacement that affects the normal residency requirements. Applicants should contact potential supervisors with an initial expression of interest before completing the formal admissions process. Required Application Information Applicants should prepare the following as part of their scholarship application: Research proposal: An outline of the intended doctoral research project. Scholarship eligibility statement: An explanation of the applicant’s interest in and eligibility for the scholarship. Proof of residency or relevant status: Possible evidence includes school certificates, undergraduate degree certificates, UN refugee registration cards or an airport logbook. Statement of commitment: An explanation of how the applicant intends to contribute to the future of Palestinian higher education. Applicants must also indicate in the Oxford graduate application that they wish to be considered for the Palestine-Oxford Scholarship. They should follow the university’s standard DPhil application requirements and provide any additional documents required by the admissions process. An application fee applies, but refugees and displaced applicants may be eligible for a fee waiver. How to Apply Interested candidates should follow these steps: Develop an initial research idea suitable for a DPhil in geography and the environment. Review potential supervisors and their research expertise through the Oxford research topics and supervisors page. Contact a potential supervisor to discuss research alignment. Review the DPhil in Geography and Environment admissions information. Complete the standard Oxford graduate application, indicate interest in the Palestine-Oxford Scholarship and provide all required scholarship statements and supporting evidence. Submit the complete application before the deadline. For informal enquiries about supervision and the scholarship, contact Dr Hashem Abushama at hashem.abushama@ouce.ox.ac.uk. Information Session Prospective applicants who believe they meet the admissions criteria are invited to register for an online information session scheduled for 22 October, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. UK time. Registration: Sign up for the Palestine-Oxford Scholarship information session. Application Deadline The final deadline is Tuesday, 26 January 2027, at 12:00 noon UK time.
