Applicants with only a bachelor’s or taught master’s degree are not eligible. The academic background should be relevant to IPDS research, including international relations, political science, peace and conflict studies, strategic or security studies, area studies, economics, international law, public policy, history, gender studies, media, communications, diplomacy or a related discipline. Applicants are also expected to have at least two published pieces, such as journal articles, book chapters, policy briefs, working papers or opinion pieces published through recognised outlets. A strong command of written English and the ability to dedicate approximately 8–10 hours each week for four months are required. Research Areas Fellows can select a preferred IPDS research centre and a second-choice centre. Available areas include BRI and China Studies, SCO Studies, Central Asia and Eurasian Studies, European Studies, American Studies, Africa Studies, ASEAN Studies, Women, Peace and Leadership, and the IPDS Leadership Center. Cross-centre research is also possible in areas covering peace, security and global governance. Proposed research should align with the selected centre while connecting meaningfully to the applicant’s academic or professional research interests. Fellowship Activities and Outputs During the four-month fellowship, each fellow develops a research plan with the relevant centre. The expected outputs include a 3,000–5,000-word policy paper developed from the approved proposal and published through the IPDS research series. Fellows are also expected to produce two commentaries of approximately 800–1,500 words, contribute to relevant centre research activities and participate in at least one online IPDS seminar or roundtable. Monthly discussions with the centre lead, together with written progress updates at the midpoint and conclusion of the fellowship, form part of the programme. Fellows receive the title Non-Resident Research Fellow and can have a profile published on the IPDS website during the appointment. Successful fellows receive editorial feedback from the IPDS Research Desk and can develop research into policy-oriented publications. They also receive a Certificate of Fellowship and a formal completion letter documenting their role and published outputs. The programme can provide opportunities to participate in online seminars and IPDS dialogues involving researchers, diplomats and practitioners. Fellows may also develop their policy papers into submissions for the Journal of Peace and Diplomacy, subject to the journal’s standard peer-review process. How to Apply Applicants should prepare a CV, a single-authored writing sample of at least 1,500 words, proof of degree or doctoral enrolment, a 500–800-word research proposal, a 300–500-word statement of purpose and details of one academic referee.
