globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 7, 2026

Description

The Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) has opened applications for the 2027–2028 LEAD Fellowship for Promoting Women in Global Health, a fully funded, one-year leadership development programme designed for experienced global health professionals from low- and middle-income countries. The fellowship is offered by the Harvard Global Health Institute in collaboration with the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. It is designed to strengthen the leadership capabilities of established global health professionals while providing personalised coaching, mentorship, executive education and access to Harvard’s global health network. The programme combines a 12-month virtual curriculum with a six-week in-person experience in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in April 2028. Key Details Fellowship: Harvard LEAD Fellowship for Promoting Women in Global Health Host: Harvard Global Health Institute Institution: Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Fellowship period: 1 September 2027 – 31 August 2028 Duration: 12 months In-person component: Six weeks in Cambridge, Massachusetts In-person period: April 2028 Funding: Fully funded Eligible applicants: Global health professionals from low- and middle-income countries Minimum qualification: Master’s degree in a relevant field Professional experience: At least 10 years beyond education Application deadline: 15 November 2026 at 11:59 PM EST About the Harvard LEAD Fellowship The LEAD Fellowship provides experienced global health professionals with dedicated time and resources to strengthen their leadership capabilities and consider new approaches to their work. Rather than following a standard training programme, the fellowship is highly personalised. Fellows develop leadership goals around their individual interests, professional objectives and areas for growth. During the fellowship year, participants will engage in: One-on-one leadership coaching. Individual mentorship. An executive education course. Speaking opportunities. Private leadership masterclasses led by Harvard faculty. Networking opportunities. Cohort-based leadership training. Independent project work. Engagement with Harvard faculty and senior mentors. The programme also provides fellows with opportunities to develop long-term professional relationships with peers and mentors across Harvard University. Fully Funded Benefits The Harvard LEAD Fellowship provides substantial financial support for the required six-week residential component in the United States. For the April 2028 in-person experience, the fellowship will cover: International travel/flight costs Housing in Cambridge, Massachusetts J-1 visa fees Living stipend during the U.S. residency The fellowship therefore enables selected professionals to undertake the Harvard residential experience without bearing the major travel and accommodation costs themselves. Who Is Eligible? The programme welcomes applicants from different continents, regions, disciplines and sectors within global health. Applicants must meet the following requirements: Academic qualification: Applicants must hold at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field. Professional experience: Candidates must work full-time in global health and have at least 10 years of professional experience after completing their education. Experience gained as a university student does not count toward the 10-year requirement. Leadership experience: Applicants must demonstrate substantial leadership experience as well as clear potential for further leadership development. Cambridge residency: Successful fellows must be able to take a leave of absence, or equivalent arrangement, from their home institution during the six-week in-person programme in April 2028. U.S. visa eligibility: Applicants must be eligible to obtain a J-1 visa and be able to reside in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the six-week residential period. Previous fellowship restriction: During the two years immediately preceding the Harvard fellowship, candidates must not have participated in a full-time fellowship lasting four months or longer. Who Is the Fellowship Designed For? The programme is particularly relevant to established professionals working across areas such as global health research, clinical practice, public health, advocacy, health policy, administration and related fields. The fellowship has previously brought together professionals from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and South America. To date, the programme has welcomed 26 fellows from 21 countries. How to Strengthen an Application Because the fellowship targets experienced leaders, applicants should demonstrate more than academic achievement. A strong application should clearly communicate the candidate’s leadership journey, professional impact, future ambitions and potential to influence global health. Applicants should provide concrete examples of: Leadership responsibilities they have undertaken. Health challenges they have helped address. Measurable results or impact achieved. How they have influenced policy, organisations, communities or systems. Leadership challenges they currently face. Skills and areas they hope to develop through the fellowship. How Harvard’s network and resources would contribute to their future work. The highly personalised nature of the programme means applicants should clearly explain why the LEAD Fellowship is appropriate for their specific leadership goals. Application Deadline All application materials must be submitted by: 15 November 2026 at 11:59 PM EST Applicants selected for the fellowship will be notified in spring 2027. The fellowship will run from 1 September 2027 to 31 August 2028, including the six-week in-person experience in Cambridge in April 2028. How to Apply Eligible candidates should submit their applications through the official Harvard Global Health Institute LEAD Fellowship application process.
