DAAD Global Research Opportunities for the South (GROW) Scholarship Programme 2026: Apply Now!
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

April 28, 2026

Description

The GROW (Global Research Opportunities for the South) programme, offered by German Academic Exchange Service, stands out as a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening research capacity and partnerships across the Global South. In an increasingly interconnected research landscape, international collaboration has become essential for addressing complex global challenges. Global Research Opportunities for the South (GROW) Programme: A Programme with a Development Focus Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the GROW programme is designed to support development-oriented research. It targets scholars from countries on the OECD DAC list—particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, while also including Latin America and Asia. The core objective is not just academic advancement, but the application of research to real-world development challenges. Participants are expected to return to their home institutions with enhanced expertise, stronger networks, and the capacity to drive institutional and societal impact. Who Can Apply? The programme is open to a wide academic spectrum, including: Doctoral candidates Postdoctoral researchers University lecturers and professors Established academics and scientists Applicants must be affiliated with a university or research institution in their home country. Importantly, individuals already based in Germany or pursuing full-time research there are not eligible. The programme places strong emphasis on inclusivity, actively encouraging applications from women and individuals from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds. Two Flexible Funding Tracks GROW offers two distinct programme lines, allowing applicants to tailor their engagement based on their research needs: 1. Preparatory and Cooperation Visits (1–2 months)This track supports short-term visits to Germany aimed at building partnerships, developing joint research ideas, and laying the groundwork for future collaborations. 2. Research Stays (2–6 months)This option enables scholars to conduct independent research projects in collaboration with a German host institution. Projects must demonstrate clear development relevance and include a plan for transferring results back to the home country. In both tracks, the focus is on collaboration, knowledge exchange, and long-term impact—not conference attendance or short-term visibility. Global Research Opportunities for the South (GROW) Programme: Alignment with Global Development Goals A defining feature of the programme is its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All proposals must clearly connect to at least one SDG, ensuring that funded research contributes to areas such as: Health and education Climate and environmental sustainability Governance and social inclusion Innovation and development systems This alignment reinforces the programme’s commitment to research that is both academically rigorous and socially relevant. Funding and Benefits The GROW scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, including: Monthly stipends ranging from €1,400 to €2,150, depending on academic level Travel allowance Health, accident, and liability insurance Additional support may be available for applicants with disabilities or chronic illnesses, ensuring equitable participation. The funding period must begin in 2026 and conclude by 31 January 2027, with no امکان for extensions. Selection Criteria Applications are evaluated by an independent panel of experts based on several key criteria: Academic excellence and qualifications Quality, originality, and feasibility of the research proposal Clear development relevance and SDG alignment Strength of collaboration with German host institutions Potential for long-term impact and knowledge transfer Applicants are also assessed on their motivation, career trajectory, and ability to contribute to capacity building in their home countries. Why This Programme Matters The GROW programme reflects a broader shift in global research funding—from isolated academic projects to collaborative, impact-driven initiatives. By prioritising development relevance and international cooperation, it helps bridge the gap between knowledge production and practical application. For researchers in the Global South, it offers more than just funding—it provides access to global networks, advanced research environments, and opportunities to amplify their work on an international stage.
