Who Can Apply? The fellowship is intended for mid-career professionals with demonstrated experience or expertise in technology policy, media, public policy or related fields. Applicants may have expertise in a particular technology-policy issue, geographic region or broader questions concerning technology’s effects on democracy and society. International applicants are eligible, including candidates who are not authorised to work in the United States. The program particularly welcomes applications from the Global Majority and underrepresented communities in media. There is no specific preferred geographic or thematic focus for applicants from the Global South. Candidates should be able to demonstrate strong writing and analytical abilities and propose an area of focus that explains what they intend to explore and why their background makes them well suited to the topic. Fellowship Responsibilities Fellows are expected to produce analysis or reporting related to technology and democracy at least monthly throughout the fellowship. While the subject matter can evolve during the year, applicants should begin with a clearly defined area of interest. Participants must also attend a mandatory monthly cohort meeting and a monthly check-in with the Tech Policy Press editorial team. Fellows are expected to collaborate with other fellows and the organisation’s editorial team where appropriate, meet agreed deadlines and disclose potential conflicts of interest. The application requires: A CV or resume A cover letter of no more than two pages explaining what the applicant hopes to accomplish Links to previous published work Two professional references Writing samples should generally have been published within the previous three years and must be publicly accessible. Acceptable examples may include reported articles, policy analyses, essays, opinion pieces, podcasts, newsletters or data projects. At least one submitted piece must have been originally written in English. Unpublished research papers, dissertations and class assignments are not accepted as published work. How to Strengthen an Application Applicants can strengthen their submissions by clearly defining a technology-policy issue, explaining its public-interest significance and demonstrating relevant experience through strong published work. The proposed focus should show how the applicant intends to contribute original reporting or analysis. Applicants from regions and communities that are often overlooked in global technology-policy debates can use their contextual knowledge and professional experience to explain perspectives that may be underrepresented. Professional references should come from individuals who can credibly speak to the applicant’s writing quality or ability to produce public-interest work related to technology and democracy. A shortlisted group may be invited to participate in one online interview. The fellowship follows a highly competitive application process.
