Western Cape Government Traffic Officer Cadet Bursary Programme (2026): Structured Career Entry Guide The Western Cape Government is offering a fully funded training opportunity for young South Africans interested in pursuing a career in traffic law enforcement. The programme provides an entry pathway into public service through a structured 12-month cadet training course leading to a qualification in road traffic law enforcement. Programme Overview The bursary forms part of the recruitment initiative by the Western Cape Mobility Department. It is designed to train selected candidates as Student Cadet Traffic Officers through a formal qualification process. Successful applicants will enrol in a 12-month Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement, delivered at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell. Training is scheduled to begin on 8 June 2026. Upon completion, cadets may be deployed across various traffic centres within the Western Cape, depending on operational needs. Purpose of the Programme The primary objective of the cadet bursary programme is to develop skilled traffic officers capable of: Enforcing road traffic and transport legislation Supporting public safety and crime prevention initiatives Conducting visible traffic policing operations Performing administrative and operational duties within traffic services The programme also aims to strengthen road safety enforcement capacity across the Western Cape region. Deployment Locations Successful candidates may be assigned to various traffic centres, including: Worcester Laingsburg Beaufort West Oudtshoorn Somerset West Brackenfell Vredenburg Vredendal Caledon Swellendam Mossel Bay George Knysna These placements reflect operational needs and may involve rotational or shift-based duties. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet strict entry criteria to be considered for selection. Minimum requirements include: Grade 12 (Senior Certificate or equivalent) Valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission) Physical fitness suitable for demanding training No criminal record Additional disqualifying conditions include visible tattoos and body piercings (with limited exceptions for females), as the role requires strict uniform standards. Applicants must also be under the age of 35, as individuals older than 35 are not eligible to apply. Selection and Assessment Process The recruitment process is rigorous and includes multiple stages designed to evaluate suitability for the role. Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo: Medical examinations, including drug screening Psychological and psychometric assessments Physical fitness testing Driving and written evaluations SAPS clearance for criminal records Structured interviews Candidates may also be subject to ongoing fitness and drug testing throughout the training period. A medical certificate confirming fitness for strenuous physical activity, including a pregnancy test result, may also be required. Training Conditions The programme operates under a 12-month fixed-term training contract. Participants are expected to: Attend full-time training Participate in practical field deployments Work within a 24/7 shift system when required Adhere to strict disciplinary and operational standards While the programme provides structured training and experience, it does not guarantee permanent employment. Any future permanent positions will be subject to separate competitive recruitment processes under public service regulations. Compensation and Benefits Selected cadets receive a monthly training stipend of: R5,000 per month (training allowance) This stipend is provided for the duration of the 12-month programme. It does not include additional benefits such as meals or accommodation. The bursary is designed to support trainees while they complete their qualification and gain practical experience in the field.
