The Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) has officially opened applications for the prestigious 2027–2028 Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme, an international residential fellowship designed to support advanced research in the humanities and social sciences. The programme aims to advance global scholarship on cultural diversity, cultural heritage, creativity, societal structures, and public resistance through interdisciplinary academic collaboration. Applications for the fellowship close on 1 June 2026 at 23:59 CET. Advancing Global Research in Humanities and Social Sciences Named after renowned scholar Barbro Klein, the fellowship encourages innovative research that explores cultural and social diversity from both local and global perspectives. The fellowship is open to scholars from across the humanities and social sciences, including researchers working in fields such as: Anthropology Sociology Cultural Studies History Political Science Heritage Studies Literary and Media Studies Global and Area Studies The programme particularly encourages applications from talented younger scholars based in non-Western countries and from underrepresented genders. Fellowship Duration and Residency Periods Applicants may apply for either a single semester or the full academic year: Autumn Semester: 1 September 2027 – 17 December 2027 Spring Semester: 11 January 2028 – 16 June 2028 Full Academic Year: 1 September 2027 – 16 June 2028 The fellowship is residential and hosted at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in Uppsala, Sweden, offering scholars the opportunity to engage in a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment. The programme seeks scholars with active international research profiles and promising contributions within their disciplines. Financial Support and Accommodation Fellows selected for the programme generally receive a monthly salary during their residency at SCAS. However, the collegium clarified that fellowship funding may not fully match scholars’ home institution salaries. Participants are therefore encouraged to secure supplementary support through sabbatical funding, grants, or institutional funding where possible. In most cases, SCAS provides and covers accommodation costs for fellows who reside outside the Stockholm-Uppsala region. The collegium may also assist Stockholm-based fellows who face commuting difficulties. Selection and Review Process Applications are reviewed by a selection committee composed of long-term fellows at the collegium, with final decisions made by the Principal of SCAS. The institution noted that applications, including personal data, may be shared with external referees, including reviewers outside the European Union and European Economic Area. Applicants will receive notification of the results through the Varbi online application system no later than 28 February 2027. Application Process Candidates are required to submit applications through the official Varbi online application portal linked on the fellowship webpage. The collegium strongly advises applicants to submit materials well before the deadline to allow time for technical assistance if required. SCAS also emphasized that applicants should apply to only one fellowship programme, as all applications are reviewed by the same committee. Submitting multiple applications to different SCAS fellowship programmes will not improve selection chances.
