Application Deadline
June 19, 2026
The Resilience Project has announced that applications are now open for its 2026 Resilience Fellowship, a youth-led leadership and wellbeing programme designed to support young changemakers working at the intersection of climate justice, mental health, and community resilience across East Africa. The fellowship will run over a 9-month period, with applications open to selected countries including Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. The deadline for applications is 31 May 2026 at 11:59pm EAT. A Youth-Led Fellowship Focused on Climate Resilience and Wellbeing The Resilience Fellowship is designed as a participatory, human-centred leadership programme that brings together young people to strengthen emotional wellbeing, climate awareness, and community-based action. Now in its fifth edition, the programme continues to focus on supporting youth-led responses to climate anxiety, burnout, and social pressures linked to environmental change. The Resilience Project describes the fellowship as a space for personal growth, peer learning, and collective action, with participants working directly within their communities to facilitate resilience-building activities. Fellowship Structure and Learning Experience The 2026 cohort will include 12 pairs of participants, with applicants required to apply in pre-formed partnerships. Selected fellows will co-lead community-based “Resilience Circles,” designed to support emotional wellbeing and strengthen social cohesion among young people. The programme includes both in-person and remote components, beginning with a five-day residential retreat in nature, where participants engage in restorative activities, peer learning, and leadership development. Fellows will also receive certification as Mental Health First Aiders, along with training in facilitation, leadership, and community project management. Core Commitments and Responsibilities Participants in the fellowship are expected to commit significant time and engagement throughout the programme. This includes completing a two-day Mental Health First Aid training, attending the in-person residential session scheduled for 31 July to 4 August 2026, and actively facilitating weekly community sessions. Each pair of fellows will co-lead Resilience Circles for groups of 16–20 young people in their local communities. This involves approximately 5–6 hours of weekly preparation and facilitation over an 8-week cycle. In addition, fellows are expected to participate in monthly mentorship sessions, weekly reporting activities, and ongoing check-ins with programme coordinators to support accountability and learning. Benefits and Support for Participants The fellowship offers both financial and developmental support to selected participants. Each fellow receives a stipend of approximately KES 40,000, alongside full coverage of travel costs for programme activities. Beyond financial support, the programme provides structured mentorship over eight months, opportunities for peer connection, and skills development in facilitation, leadership, emotional resilience, and community engagement. The Resilience Project emphasises that participants will gain practical experience in community leadership while also building long-term support networks with fellow changemakers across the region. Eligibility Criteria The programme is open to young people aged 18 to 28 who are based in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, or Tanzania. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in climate justice, community wellbeing, and youth leadership. A key requirement is that applicants apply in pairs, reflecting the fellowship’s emphasis on collaboration and shared leadership. Participants should also be comfortable engaging in emotionally reflective work, including discussions around climate anxiety, burnout, and mental health. The programme encourages applications from individuals from marginalised and underrepresented communities, highlighting its commitment to inclusive climate justice and equitable participation. Application Process and Timeline Applicants are required to download a detailed application booklet and prepare responses before submitting their application through an online form. The final submission deadline is 31 May 2026, after which shortlisted candidates will be selected for the 2026 cohort. Successful applicants will be notified ahead of programme commencement in July 2026, with the fellowship officially running through early 2027. Building Climate Leadership Through Community Care The Resilience Fellowship continues to position itself as more than a traditional leadership programme. Instead, it integrates mental health support, climate justice education, and grassroots community engagement into a single model of youth development. Through initiatives led by The Resilience Project, the fellowship aims to equip young leaders with both the emotional tools and practical skills needed to respond to the growing pressures of climate change while strengthening resilience within their communities.
